Embedded Case Studies in General

An embedded approach to teaching literacy and numeracy requires workplaces and tutors to identify and exploit opportunities for developing literacy and numeracy outcomes in a vocational context.

This section contains case studies of activities and teaching strategies for developing learners in a vocational context.


Case Study: Vocational Profiles from UCOL

The literacy and numeracy team at UCOL has worked with tutors in each Level 1-3 vocational course to develop profiles. The profiles are based on a model from Workbase. Each profile describes the reading, writing, speaking and listening, and numeracy demands of the occupation. Learners can look at the profiles to find out the skills they will need to have or acquire to be successful in that vocation.


Case Study: Using the Assessment Tool

Train Me is a national PTE that has been delivering quality training to youth and adults across a range of programmes including alternative education, employment programmes and youth guarantee programmes.


Case Study: Canterbury Spinners

As a division of Godfrey Hirst New Zealand Limited, Canterbury Spinners employs about 290 employees. These include unskilled and unqualified operators, as well as technically qualified staff. The company supplies yarn to carpet factories in both New Zealand and Australia. The company was aware that there was a literacy and numeracy need amongst their employees.


Case Study: From bush men to educators

The Te Wānanga o Aotearoa (TWoA) Certificate in Cable Logging (Papatoa) kaiako has become the first TWoA kaiako to achieve the National Certificate in Adult Literacy Education (Vocational) as part of the He Whakapahuhu Kahukura (HWK) Learning Progressions Framework training.


Case Study: Differentiated Teaching

Adult educators almost always face many different levels of learners in their classrooms, with all the attendant difficulties in teaching. Don Reed is a tutor at Wintec, in Hamilton, teaching on the National Certificate in Electrical Engineering Level 2 programme. He has 18 students in his full time class ranging in age from 16 to mid thirties and 12 students in an evening class.
