Describing shapes and spaces

Many occupations require workers to either sketch or read from a plan or diagram. This activity can help learners

  • develop vocabulary to describe shapes, locations and spaces
  • develop listening skills to interpret oral instructions or descriptions
  • develop a sense of proportion and scale.

Instructions for learners:

Learners work in pairs, sitting back to back. One student has a copy of a picture, plan or diagram and gives instructions to the other student, who then draws the picture from the instructions given.

Students may like to draw their own diagrams and give instructions to other students.

After the drawing is completed learners can compare their efforts.

Discuss what instructions helped, didn’t help.

'What words could we use to improve what we did?' Encourage terminology such as the name of shapes, middle, front, behind, below etc.

Extension ideas:

  • Include a scale legend in the diagram and ask learners to calculate and describe the actual size of the objects and distance between objects.
  • Get one student to read and describe the plan and the others set up the room according to the instructions.

Key numeracy outcomes

Learners who successfully complete this activity are able to:

  • name different geometrical shapes
  • use language of direction and location
  • follow a set of instructions
  • convert scale drawing measurements to actual size
