Give the learners the following three tables that show square numbers. Ask, “What is in the same about each set of three shaded numbers?”

After a while the learners should state that “the two lowest numbers in the triple add to the largest number.”

Record the results as equations:

62 + 82 =102 52 + 122 =132 72 + 242 = 252
