In the following pages we provide an example of how learners come to derive a formula rather than just be given it. The contexts, taxi fares and temperature, are examples of situations that might be used. Using a context that is familiar to a learner helps to engage them and it gives a “prototype” problem that has common characteristics with other problems. With support learners can transfer from the prototype to problems in their course.
