Learning unit: Building formulae understanding to build number sense

By Lynette Winter and Vince Wright

This unit is designed to help tutors working with adult learners. It provides useful information about engaging learners with formulae. Understanding and using formulae are important outcomes for many trade-based courses at tertiary level. The unit looks at common problems that learners have with formulae and suggests strategies to help these learners overcome their problems. It also provides some lesson examples that tutors can use in classes to help learners to “unpack” the meaning behind the symbols.

Overview: setting the scene, tutors outcomes, and resources you will need
Section 1: common challenges for learners and strategies for tutors
Section 2: student activity examples
Section 3: other contexts that demonstrate building up a formula
Section 4: assessment activity
