People Profile

Jan Eyre is a Literacy and Numeracy Advisor at the Universal College of Learning (UCOL) in Palmerston North. Part of her role is to help lecturers interpret and use reports from the Adult Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Tool (ALNAT).

Leigh Anderton is a lecturer on UCOL’s Level 4 Certificate in Art and Design, based at UCOL’s Whanganui campus.

This open entry programme attracts a wide range of students, from school leavers to mature students and second chance learners.

Setting

In 2010, UCOL used the Assessment Tool with all Level 1-3 programmes that had an intake in Semester Two. The Certificate in Art and Design lecturer asked if her Level 4 students could also complete the online reading assessment. She felt this would provide valuable information for those who were keen to progress to diploma or degree-level study next year. The results of the assessment would give them a realistic idea of their current abilities in reading, and help them identify areas to work on over the next few months before they apply for higher study in 2011.
